"Cornflowers" studio apartment in the heart of historic Amsterdam
Bars & clubs
You won’t find me in town after midnight too often, so I am not the best to tell you about the hotest places…. Sorry!
Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20-22 – Open since 1990: one of the largest ‘grand cafes’ of the city. Very nice terrace at the back with a view of the Amstel River.
Funenkade 7. Tel 3201786. Not just a cafe, but a brewery where you can taste locally brewed special beers. Open daily from 3pm – 20pm. Tram 10 stops in front of the brewery, or take bus 22 from central station to Insulindeweg. Much more fun then the Heineken “Disney” experience. Every Friday at 4 pm there is a free tour of the brewery.
Kloveniersburgwal 125. It is on the corner with Staalstraat and has a sign ‘Oorlam’ above the door. Nice mix of people, many students and a nice variety of beers.
Spuistraat 109. Relatively new gay cafe with generally a young crowd. Very relaxed and friendly.
‘The Angel’ – gay bar opposite the Queenshead on Zeedijk at the Central Station end. Opened in 2007 and a popular hang out on late afternoons.
Zeedijk 20. This bar was the first gay bar in this end of the street to be established. Together with the Engel and the Barderij they are a nice addition to the gay scene: very friendly bars with many locals and a good atmosphere.
Zeedijk 14. serves a mixed clientele and can be fun.
Amstel 178. Gay club with a young crowd with six packs. Supposedly ‘classy’ club that for the looks of it could be in Milan or Miami.
Elandstraat 119. Brown cafe in the Jordaan area for lesbians, has been there for decades. For a relaxed atmosphere to sip a beer and read the newspaper or meet your new girlfriend, when you need one!
Reguliersdwarsstraat 36. Classic bar for gay men.
